ali johannes ülker

Ali Johannes Ülker lives and works in Berlin and Istanbul, but travels much of the time. His career started with
graffiti, so streetart features still permeate his oeuvre. Half human, half mythical, the characters of his paintings seem to come from their own different worlds and find themselves exposed to a post human reality. The world appears as an exile. Nativeness plays an important role in terms of both content and materials. Ülker works with wood, paper, paperboard, canvases and walls. On different levels he addresses themes like origins and belongings, the fall from paradise, but also the genesis of new worlds. The paintings work with a sensual physicality but without false exoticisms; with elemental powers, sometimes ritual sceneries, but never with folklore, transfiguration or kitsch. Authentic materials and self blended colors remind the viewer of the naked reality and the urban surroundings, that contrast with the dynamic primal energy and the atmosphere of the painted characters.
